Stefan Schulz - Bass Trombone (Berlin Philharmonic)
International Bass Trombone Soloist
Stefan Schulz, born 1971 in Berlin, first played horn and later switched to the trombone. He studied in Berlin in Chicago. Before becoming a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2002, Schulz was bass trombonist of the Berlin Staatskapelle from 1993 to 2002 and taught in the Orchestra’s Academy. This pedagogical activity laid the foundation for further teaching positions and professorships: at the Academy of Music and Theater in Hannover, at the ‘Hanns Eisler’ Academy of Music in Berlin (2000-04) and at Berlin’s University of Arts (since 2004). In 2005 he was appointed Professor h.c. at the University of Shanghai. As "Professor-Invitado" he teaches at the Spanish ‘Musikene’ Academy in San Sebastian as well as at the Conservatorio Superior in Zaragoza. He is also regularly asked to hold master classes throughout the world.
As soloist Stefan Schulz has performed with orchestras such as Rundfunk Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Dresdner Philharmoniker , Hamurger Philharmoniker, Staatsorchester Wiesbaden, Philharmonia Wien, Aarhus Symphonie Orchestra. A regular player in the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra from 1996 to 2002, Stefan Schulz also performs in various chamber-music groups, including the Soloists of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic Brass Ensemble and the Daniel Schnyder Trio. He also plays as a regular guest with the German Brass Ensemble.
Stefan plays exclusively on instruments built by Antoine Courtois
and has released 2 CDs on the swedish label BIS.
